October 22, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
Senior Molly Contini scored twice to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 4-2 win over Providence in the Tigers' season opener this afternoon at Schneider Arena.
The Friars, who had already played six games prior to today, tried to play spoiler but two Princeton goals in the last five minutes of the game gave the Tigers the victory.
Freshman Sylvie Wallin scored the game-winning goal with her first collegiate point at 15:56 of the third. The goal came just 31 seconds after Providence had tied the game at 2-2 on a power-play goal. It was a face-off win by sophomore Karlie Lund low in the zone that got the puck back to defender Wallin at the blue line. She drove the puck through traffic and over the right shoulder of goalie Alanna Serviss.
Contini added the insurance with an empty-net goal at 18:51 when she was released just in time from a hooking infraction. Providence was desperatly trying to knot the game on the power-play but a blocked shot led to sophomore Stephanie Sucharda trying to clear the puck down the ice. As Contini was sprung from the puck she collected it and skated in on the open net for the score.
After a scoreless first period, Christina Putigna put Providence on the board at 11:09 with help from Natasha Burzynski and Danielle Hardy.

She rifled a shot that wide that was collected and backhanded by Kiersten Falck towards the goal where Keiko DeClerck took aim. The puck got caught up along the goal mouth and Contini was on the back post to push it over the line at 13:31 of the second.
Princeton recovered from an onslaught of Providence's chances on netminder Alysia DaSilva by settling to puck behind the goal before outletting. It was senior Fiona McKenna with the puck in the corner pushing it up the left wing to freshman Carly Bullock. Bullock and Lund had a two-on-one and Lund finished off the play to Princeton on top 2-1 at 12:34 of the third.
DaSilva made 29 saves in her first win of the season, while Serviss stopped 31 shots for Providence.
