The No. 13 Princeton Tigers travel to the Cornell Big Red for their final road contest of the 2016 season. The game will be on the Ivy League Digital Network.
What's Going On?
- Princeton is 9-6 in 2016 and 4-1 in the Ivy League. The Tigers lost a tough 3-2 decision in overtime to then No. 20 Harvard at Bedford Field last Saturday.
- Trailing by two vs. Harvard, sophomore Sophia Tornetta got the Tigers on the board with 25:53 to go in the game.
- As the clock ticked near six minutes, the scoring prowess of senior captain Cat Caro came through as she deflected a shot by the Crimson goalie. Harvard's Kathleen Young scored one minute into overtime to give the road team the victory.
- The Tigers now trail Harvard by one game in the Ivy League standings. The Crimson are at Dartmouth and home for Columbia to wrap up the conference season.
- Caro has a career-high 14 goals and 31 points to lead the Tigers. After scoring 12 goals in her first two seasons combined, junior Ryan McCarthy has 11 tallies and a career-best 26 points in 2016. Tornetta is averaging over two points per game with 17 in eight contests. Freshman Carlotta von Gierke boasts a team-high seven assists.
- Princeton has two wins over top-20 teams this season, defeating then No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11).
- The Tigers are No. 12 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
- Caro leads the Ivy League in goals and is tied for second in points. She is tied for ninth in all of Division-I in goals per game (1.0) and is 16th nationally in points per game (2.21).
- McCarthy is third in the conference in points (26) and sits in the top 40 in Division-I in goals (0.73) and points (1.73) per game .
- von Gierke is tied for second in the Ivy League in assists.
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on the United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- The trio, most recently, was selected to U-21 national team's roster for the Women's Hockey Junior World Cup this November.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- The Tigers lead the all-time series, 30-5-3.
- Princeton has won the last eight meetings vs. Cornell. The Big Red's last win was during the 2007 season.
- Prior to Cornell's win in 2007, Princeton went 16 consecutive matches without a loss.
- Princeton is on a 12-match unbeaten streak in Ithaca, having last lost in 1990.
- Cornell's last two-game winning streak vs. Princeton came in the 1983-84 seasons.
- Maddie Copeland '16 netted a pair of second-half goals to lead 20th-ranked Princeton to a 4-0 victory over Cornell on Senior Day at Bedford Field.
- Improving to 9-6 (6-0 Ivy) overall, Princeton clinched at least a share of the Ivy title for the 11th-straight year and the 21st time in 22 seasons.
- The Tigers had a 14-8 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
- The Big Red are 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the Ivy League.
- Cornell has come up with victories over Colgate, Lehigh, Ohio, Lock Haven, Vermont, Yale, Brown and Rider.
- Katie Carlson leads the team with eight goals this season. Carlson and Krysten Mayers have a team-high 21 points.
- Kelly Johnson has posted a 1.99 GAA in 13 games this year.
