Four Tigers Score as Princeton Draws Syracuse in Series Opener
December 10, 2021 | Women's Ice Hockey
Annie Kuehl, Shannon Griffin, Stef Wallace and Grace Kuipers each had a goal as Princeton and Syracuse played to a 4-4 draw in the weekend's first of two games between the teams on Friday night in Syracuse.
Princeton battled back from a 2-0 first-period deficit with goals just 33 seconds apart more than seven minutes into the second period. On the goal to get the Tigers on the board, Wallace won the puck at the Tigers' defensive blue line, and Kuipers skated it into the attacking zone, putting a shot on goal that netminder Allison Small saved but produced a rebound that Kuehl sent back in to pull Princeton within one.
The game-tying goal followed quickly, with Maggie Connors and Mia Coene sending a puck up the boards that Griffin brought toward the net, firing inside the left post to make it 2-2.
Syracuse took a 3-2 lead into the final ice cut, but Princeton answered with a power-play goal from Wallace just more than a minute into the third. Kuehl and Connors cycled the puck out from the end boards to Wallace at the top of the slot for Wallace to thread a shot through and inside the right post.
Syracuse went ahead on a goal from Shelby Calof, whose cousin Andrew Calof '14 is a Princeton hockey alum, just before the midway point of the third period, but Kuipers answered that just 25 seconds later, putting back a rebound off a Sharon Frankel shot to make it 4-4. Kuehl played the puck to Frankel, earning her second assist of the night and giving her a career-first three-point game.
In another familial connection between the teams, Princeton rookie netminder Jennifer Olnowich subbed in for starter Rachel McQuigge at the start of the second period, stopping 23 of 25 shots to save a tie against some former teammates of her older sister Allie Olnowich, a Syracuse alum, in what was Jennifer Olnowich's career debut.
The teams will get together again on Saturday at 2 p.m. back at Syracuse's Tennity Ice Pavilion for Princeton's final game of the 2021 portion of the schedule.
