No. 6 Princeton's Loaded Schedule Continues Against No. 4 Duke and No. 23 Rutgers

PRINCETON, N.J. - After an incredible double-overtime victory over No. 5 Penn State, the No. 6 Princeton Tigers' schedule hardly lets up with two battles vs. No. 4 Duke and No. 23 Rutgers this weekend.

One Last Look at 2017:
- The Tigers finished 2017 with a 12-7 record, reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals. It was the second straight season that Princeton won at least 12 games and at least one NCAA Tournament game. Head coach Carla Tagliente's squad won the outright Ivy League championship, its 25th all-time. The last time that Princeton did not play in at least the NCAA Play-In Game was in 2004.
- The Tigers had two All-Americans in Maddie Bacskai (first team) and Ryan McCarthy (second team).
- Princeton boasted six All-Region players in Bacskai, McCarthy, Julianna Tornetta, MaryKate Neff, Clara Roth and Elise Wong.
- McCarthy was selected as the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, Bacskai was the conference's Defensive Player of the Year, Tornetta earned Ivy Co-Rookie of the Year and Carla Tagliente picked up Coach of the Year honors.
- Princeton featured nine All-Ivy players in Bacskai (first team), McCarthy (first team), J. Tornetta (first team), Neff (second team), Sophia Tornetta (second team), Wong (second team), Grace Baylis (honorable mention), Nicole Catalino (honorable mention) and Roth (honorable mention).
- Princeton had two players in the Ivy League's top 11 in goals per game (McCarthy, Neff) and four in the top 16 in points per game (McCarthy, Roth, J. Tornetta and Neff).
- Princeton has nine of the top 25 teams in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason Coaches' Poll on its schedule.
- Tagliente's unit will get an early look at where it stands nationally with its first four contests against teams ranked among the top 14.
- After Tuesday's contest, the Tigers finally come home to Bedford Field with a contest vs. No. 3 Duke (Sept. 7).
- Princeton will also take on No. 9 Delaware on Sept. 16, No. 4 Maryland on Sept. 18, No. 19 Boston University on Sept. 30, No. 1 UConn on Oct. 7 and No. 15 Harvard on Oct. 20.
- The Tigers have two alums on the United States national team in Cat Caro '17 and Kathleen Sharkey '13.
- Sharkey has 141 caps for the national squad, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also helped the national squad to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup last summer, leading the tournament in scoring with five goals.
- Caro has made 11 appearances for the national team, recording her first cap in January and her first international goal in April.
- Maddie Bacskai, MaryKate Neff and Elise Wong were named to the U.S. U-21 team in July while Sophia Tornetta was picked for the developmental squad.
- Duke and Princeton are tied at 5-all. The Tigers are 3-2 at Bedford against Duke.
- The Blue Devils have won the last three meetings.
- These two squads have faced off once in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 with the Blue Devils earning a 2-1 victory in Princeton.
- No. 4 Duke held off No. 15 Princeton, 2-1, at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
- After the Blue Devils went in front, 2-0, Princeton connected on a corner as Ryan McCarthy lined a shot towards the cage that Elise Wong deflected in.
- After being turned away on two corners, the Tigers put together one more offensive push in the final two minutes. With 1:44 remaining, Clara Roth inserted a corner, but Sophia Tornetta had her shot blocked. With under a minute left, the Tigers had one more corner, but Duke's Sammi Steele knocked away the shot.
- Duke is 3-1 on the season, earning victories over No. 22 William and Mary, No. 23 Liberty and No. 12 Northwestern. The Blue Devils' only loss is to No. 4 Maryland.
- Olivia Sahaydak was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week this week, scoring twice vs. Northwestern. The week before, Jillian Wolgemuth was honored as ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
- Rose Tynan (three goals, two assists) and Sahaydak (four goals) pace Duke's offense with eight points. Sammi Steele has 1.76 GAA and .632 save percentage as the Blue Devils' goalie.
- Princeton leads the all-time series, 22-3-1
- The two teams renewed the state rivalry last season after a 10-year absence.
- The Tigers are 6-2 on the road against the Scarlet Knights.
- Princeton has won 10 straight games against Rutgers. The last Scarlet Knights' victory was in 1995.
- No. 12 Princeton overwhelmed No. 22 Rutgers, 4-1, at Bedford Field.
- Ryan McCarthy led the Tigers with a four-point outing and MaryKate Neff recorded her first collegiate goal.
- The Tigers peppered the Scarlet Knights with 15 shots in the victory.
- The Scarlet Knights are 3-0 on the year with wins over Richmond, Hofstra and No. 18 St. Joe's.
- Daphne Groothuis has an impressive 12 points (three goals, six assists) to lead the Rutgers' offense.
- Three different players (Austyn Cuneo, Kassidy Shetler and Alanna Golloto) have scored at least two goals for the Scarlet Knights.
