No. 4 Princeton Hosts No. 13 Virginia, NCAA Tournament This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 4 Princeton Tigers will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend (Nov. 9, 11) at Bedford Field.

Princeton welcomes No. 13 Virginia on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. No. 6 Harvard and No. 9 Penn State battle in the other contest that starts at 2:30 p.m. The winner of both matchups face off on Sunday (Nov. 11) at 1 p.m., for the right to go to the NCAA Final Four. All games will be streamed on ESPN3.

General Admission tickets are 12 dollars while students can get in for seven dollars. The first 200 Princeton students will receive free admission.

The 2018 DI field hockey championship will take place at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. Semifinals action kick off on Nov. 16, with the championship game set for Nov. 18.Â

What's Going On:
- No. 5 Princeton wrapped up the regular season with a 3-2 comeback victory over the Penn Quakers at Bedford Field last Saturday.
- Prior the contest, the team honored its Class of 2019, Nicole Catalino, Jane Donio-Enscoe, Annabeth Donovan, Sarah Holland, Casey Swezey, Sophia Tornetta, Elise Wong. That group proved to be vital as Donovan scored the game-tying goal in the second half.
- Princeton is hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009.
- The Tigers are the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament.
- This is the Tigers' 24th NCAA Tournament appearance and second-ever at-large bid to the Big Dance.
- The last time that the program did not make the tournament was in 2004.
- Princeton has played in 16 NCAA quarterfinals, seven semifinals and three championship games.
- The Tigers became the first Ivy League school to advance to the NCAA title game in 1996 and won its first and the Ivy League's first NCAA championship in 2012.
- The Tigers have posted the second most penalty corners in all of Division-I (8.35) behind Penn State (8.5). They rank in the top-10 in the NCAA in winning percentage (seventh, .765), goals against average (eighth, 1.21), points per game (eighth, 9.24), scoring margin (eighth, 2.08), goals per game (ninth, 3.35), scoring average (ninth, 3.29), shutouts per game (ninth, .35).
- Hannah Davey (second) and Clara Roth (third) are among the top three in assists per game in the Ivy League.
- Five Tigers (Sophia Tornetta, Ali McCarthy, Julianna Tornetta, Roth and Neff) are among the top 13 in the Ivy League in goals per game.
- Princeton has three players (Roth, Tornetta, Tornetta) among the top 10 in the conference in points per game.
- Grace Baylis is second in the Ivy League in goals against average (1.61).
- The Tigers have two alums on the United States national team in Cat Caro '17 and Kathleen Sharkey '13.
- Sharkey has 145 caps for the U.S., highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also helped the unit to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup last summer, leading the tournament in scoring with five goals.
- Caro has made 15 appearances for the national squad, recording her first cap in January and her first international goal in April.
- Maddie Bacskai and MaryKate Neff named to the U.S. U-21 team in July while Sophia Tornetta was picked for the developmental squad.
- Princeton and Virginia are tied at 7-all.
- The Tigers have won the last two meetings, both of which have come in the NCAA Tournament.
- In 2016, Sophia Tornetta scored a goal as time expired to send the Tigers to Final Four at Penn State.
- Last season, Ryan McCarthy knocked out the Cavaliers in Charlottesville with a goal in double overtime.
- During the 2012 NCAA title run, Princeton defeated UVA, 5-2, in the quarterfinal round.
- The Tigers are 3-1 at home against Virginia.
- Ryan McCarthy's double-overtime goal capped a thrilling 3-2 victory for No. 11 Princeton over No. 5 Virginia at Turf Field.
- Elise Wong and McCarthy registered goals before the senior captain's game-winner in double overtime.
- It was the second straight season that Princeton knocked out UVA in the NCAA Tournament.
- UVA went 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. The Cavaliers fell to No. 1 North Carolina, 5-1, in the ACC Tournament Semifinals.
- The Cavaliers have played eight matches this season against teams ranked in the top-10, picking up a win against then-ranked No. 10 Syracuse and downing No. 2 Maryland. All of UVA's losses this season have come against top-25 opponents.
- Freshman Grace Wallis leads the team with 13 points, four goals and five assists.
- Senior Greta Ell was the lone player to make the All-ACC squad, earning a second-team honor.
