What's Going On:
- Julianna Tornetta snapped a tie game not with a shot, but with a dazzling no-look pass that Maddie Bacskai instead drilled for the game-winner with 22 minutes left, ultimately giving No. 4 Princeton a 2-1 win over No. 13 Virginia in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Bedford Field Friday afternoon.
- It was a 1-1 tie when Princeton drew a penalty corner, and then another, and then finally a third. That one was inserted to Tornetta, who did the fake shot, drawing Virginia's attention, and then left the ball behind her back to Bacskai, whose perfect shot flew inside the near post.
- Princeton is hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009.
- The Tigers are the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament.
- This is the Tigers' 24th NCAA Tournament appearance and second-ever at-large bid to the Big Dance.
- The last time that the program did not make the tournament was in 2004.
- Tomorrow's contest will be Princeton's 17th NCAA quarterfinal. The Tigers have also played in seven semifinals and three championship games.
- The Tigers became the first Ivy League school to advance to the NCAA title game in 1996 and won its first and the Ivy League's first NCAA championship in 2012.
- The Tigers have two alums on the United States national team in Cat Caro '17 and Kathleen Sharkey '13.
- Sharkey has 145 caps for the U.S., highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also helped the unit to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup last summer, leading the tournament in scoring with five goals.
- Caro has made 15 appearances for the national squad, recording her first cap in January and her first international goal in April.
- Maddie Bacskai and MaryKate Neff named to the U.S. U-21 team in July while Sophia Tornetta was picked for the developmental squad.
- Princeton is 40-7-2 all-time against Harvard. The Tigers are 19-4 at home against the Crimson.
- The Tigers have won 23 of the last 25 meetings against the Crimson.
- No. 9 Harvard earned a 3-1 win over No. 3 Princeton Tigers at Bedford Field.
- Sophia Tornetta scored her 27th career goal with under four minutes to go for the lone Tigers' tally.
- The Tigers had an 8-6 shot advantage and 6-3 lead in corners.Â
- Harvard is currently on a school-record 14-game winning streak, sitting at 17-1 overall. The Crimson, at No. 6 in the national coaches' poll, have never been ranked higher at any point in program history.
- Harvard has five wins vs. ranked foes (No. 18 Maine and No. 23 Boston University, No. 3 Princeton, No. 13 Boston College and No. 9 Penn State) and its only loss has been against No. 3 Maryland.
- The Crimson got to the NCAA quarterfinals with a dominating 6-1 performance over No. 9 Penn State on Friday. Six different players scored in the game for Harvard. It was the program's first ever NCAA Tournament victory.
- Maddie Earle leads the Ivy League with 16 goals and 37 points this season.
